Mundane Astrology...Saturn Uranus Square 2021-22
6 Feb–4 Mar 2021, 1-26 Jun 2021, 16-31 Dec 2021 & 15 Sep–23 Oct 2022
Enough is Enough! Building for a New Future
The square (90o angle) between Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus is likely to dominate 2021, especially during the periods when at its strongest (see below). This square exacerbates the difficulties related to the cracks and weaknesses already evident in the system or our own lives – see Uranus in Taurus and Saturn in Aquarius and Saturn in Aquarius (Personal) – to crisis point, causing even further strife and insecurity. On a societal level, it could mean economic collapses, loss of jobs, disruptions in the supply of food and goods, the breakdown of production and consumerism, a housing crash, the collapse of banks, currencies, savings and stock, political crises and the further demise of democracy and freedoms – all coming to a head, bringing in radical and possibly tyrannical action by authorities along with riots and protests as people rise up against a system that is in desperate need of change. On a personal level we can make radical breaks from situations no longer bearable or can be thrown by something or others and be forced to let go of the past.
So 2021 is likely to be a momentous year, rife with difficulties and tensions, with such energies overflowing into 2022. Anything that does not stand up to testing will crumble and fall. However it can also be a landmark time of great evolution if we can combine the energies of both Saturn and Uranus, and test our systems, determine what is sustainable, operational and effective, what is really essential in life and what has true value, and make the necessary changes in order to build a new future, a future that respects people, the earth and nature.
If you have any natal planets at the same degrees as the Saturn Uranus squares (see below), especially in Taurus, Aquarius, Leo or Scorpio, then you are likely to be particularly affected during the corresponding period. This is likely to be a very significant time in your life for making the necessary changes and plans that will create a new future for you (in the areas associated with your natal planet) however difficult and however fearful you may be of letting go of the past.

The Saturn Uranus square brings together conflicting energies – the energies for freedom, progress and enlightenment (Uranus and Aquarius) in conflict, yet side by side, with the need for stability, protection, structure and order (Saturn and Taurus). Both energies come to the fore and there is likely to be great tension in trying to reconcile them. There can be a radical and unexpected laying down of the law, new rules and prohibitions, new boundaries, an increase in authoritarianism that limits movement, freedom and rights in the name of protection and stability. Anger and frustration with having the basic necessities of life threatened (such as a homes, jobs, earnings, savings and food supply), the routines of life disrupted, freedoms curtailed, intelligent debate and dissenting voices muzzled, social interaction restricted, democracy thwarted, individual rights suppressed, can suddenly burst out and create havoc. The people can become so fed up with the restrictions on their liberty and the shattering of their everyday lives, that they rise up and demand reform and change, take to the streets in protest, start riots, revolts and revolutions. While the authorities already in turmoil due to all the challenges, attempt to clamp down on dissent and protest with all their might, using the law as well as the police and armed forces to do so. Violent clashes can therefore be expected.
Distrust in so called democracy and voting reaches a peak because political parties and their leaders are seen as the same old establishment parties, just vying for power, with no real difference between them, paying lip service to progress, and all part of the neo-liberal, corporate capitalist network, unconcerned with the basic needs, interests and rights of the people and with no vision of a new future that respects and benefits the whole of humanity, the earth and nature. Authority figures in general are seen as oppressive and dictatorial and become the focus of negative energy, so may be forced to resign or gotten rid of and governments may topple.
This is a time when we are pushed to the end of our tethers – tethers which at some point suddenly snap. We can find that our desire for freedom and to live our lives as we wish is so thwarted by circumstances or other people and we become so fed up with restrictions and being told what we must do, no longer able to tolerate them, that we take very radical actions that we would probably never have considered previously. Saying “Enough is enough! I can’t stand this any longer”. So we may protest and rebel, break from any relationships that are stifling, quit an unbearable job or move home, to allow ourselves the freedom to better express our own individuality, to take back our independence and to find our own way.
We may try to ignore the need for change, enduring the pressure of a situation that is crying out for something new, because to move on is seemingly too fraught with difficulties, insecurity or obstacles. Then the tension can affect our health, causing depression, anxiety and mental health problems. Accidents, illnesses, societal collapses or other people may force us to let go and change, suddenly impacting our life and forcing us to adapt to new circumstances and to look for a new way forward. Whether through our own actions or that of others, changes can happen suddenly and unexpectedly. There may be splits and ruptures and the loss of what was, which can be upsetting, unnerving and make us fret for our livelihoods, but which allow us to liberate ourselves from situations that are suffocating, confining or just downright boring, situations that we essentially outgrew a while ago. This then allows us to start to rebuild our lives more in accordance with our true nature, our basic nature and Mother Nature.
Big changes are definitely on the cards during this time but the difficult challenge is to create change without causing destruction and chaos. Uranus demands that we change, that we let go of the past, find innovative ways of doing things, look to the future and start afresh, while Saturn urges us to recognise our obligations, be realistic and responsible, be organised, nobly suffer limited resources and difficulties and work hard. So this is a time when we, and those ruling our lives, have to do both at the same time, which can be very difficult. Those in authority (whether parents, bosses, governments) need to bring in reform and rules for the good of all, respect nature and human needs, be more democratic, ensure individual rights, be more community minded, use technology and science to better serve everyone, encourage inventions and advancements to benefit humanity as a whole and provide alternative ways for people to make a living. As individuals we need to be true to ourselves and to humanity in general, and dare to stand up and take responsibility to make or demand the necessary changes.
This is a time to let go of the current status quo, to throw out that which is outdated and antiquated, to recognise where our usual ways of doing things is no longer working and be more forward thinking, with new visions and ideas for the future. But at the same time we need to be responsible, recognise the need for stability and security, the need for structures to organise life and to provide for the basic necessities in life. And we need to use what is valuable from the past so that we don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. We cannot carry on as we always used to and have to recognise that new structures in our personal lives, as well as in wider society, are not only necessary but that it takes time and effort, research and planning to build them up, if they are to be enduring, solid and fit for purpose. We need to think outside the box, to evolve established knowledge and tested practices, by using innovative and alternative ideas and our own unique insights, talents and gifts, to find new ways to make a living and provide for ourselves, rather than rely on some outside authority to provide for us. At the same time, we need to respect the individuality of those around us, accept that each is different and to work together as a community, in the pursuit of a shared goal that benefits everyone. In short, we need to build new systems and ways of operating to build a new future for us all.
